A man wearing a black shirt, gloves, and a face shield is using a woodturning lathe to shape a wooden bowl in a workshop. Wood shavings are scattered around, and tools are visible on the work surface.

Hi, I’m Andrew

A man with a beard and gray hat sitting on a large tree stump in a yard surrounded by chopped logs, with trees, houses, and a blue sky in the background.
Two young boys standing outdoors against a textured gray wall, each holding a wooden craft project. The boy on the left is wearing a green zip-up jacket and blue jeans, smiling slightly. The boy on the right is wearing a black t-shirt with colorful graphics and and light blue jeans, smiling broadly, with his right hand in his pocket.

I’m a woodturner, furniture maker, and painter based in North Carolina—and you might know me from Carolina Grain Co. So here’s a little more about how this all started.

I grew up with a dad who was a talented artist, a mom who always encouraged creativity, and my paw who loved the outdoors. That early influence led me to explore all kinds of art growing up and to appreciate the beauty of the woods right outside my door. Fast forward to 2007, when I stepped into my high school woodshop class—and my life was never the same.

I went on to earn a degree in graphic design, but I knew pretty quickly I wasn’t meant to sit behind a desk all day. In 2014, I started Carolina Grain Co. as a way to combine my love of cooking and woodworking. Over time, I began to separate my more personal, art-focused pieces from the utilitarian side of my work. In 2025, I decided it was time to focus more on the work that brought me the most joy—so I created AndrewMcCarn.com as a dedicated space to share it.

My work—both in wood and on canvas—is rooted in simplicity, natural materials, and respect for the process. I often use locally sourced logs and enjoy letting the grain, shape, and imperfections of the wood guide each piece. Every piece starts with the raw character of the wood—I just help it find its final form.
